
Minnesota Wild goes global: A look at their quest for victory in the 2023 NHL Global Series in Sweden! - image source NHL.com
On April 26th, 2023, the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) jointly announced their plans for the 2023 NHL Global Series – Sweden. This year, the series will feature four prominent teams, namely the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Minnesota Wild is scheduled to play against the Ottawa Senators at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday, November 18th, and against the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7 a.m. CT on Sunday, November 19th. Both matches will take place at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. In Sweden, the time will be 5 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

Starting at 10 a.m. CET (5 p.m. CT) on Wednesday, May 3, tickets and fan travel packages for the 2023 NHL Global Series – Sweden will be available for purchase at LiveNation.se/NHL. This highly anticipated event will feature a record four NHL clubs in one European city for regular-season games.
Additionally, it will mark the second time the Minnesota Wild has played regular-season games in Europe, with the first one being in Helsinki, Finland in 2010, where they played against the Carolina Hurricanes at Hartwall Arena. Unfortunately, the Wild lost both games, 4-3 on October 7th, 2010, and 2-1 in a shootout on October 8th, 2010.
This event will also be a significant milestone for the Toronto Maple Leafs as it will be the first time they will play NHL regular-season games outside of North America. For the Detroit Red Wings, it will be the second time, and the Ottawa Senators will be making their third such trip. As part of the 2023 NHL Global Series – Sweden, each team will play two regular-season games in Stockholm.
The Minnesota Wild has a strong Swedish connection, with eight Swedish players currently on its roster, including Jonas Brodin (Karlstad), Joel Eriksson Ek (Karlstad), Filip Gustavsson (Skellefteå), Marcus Johansson (Landskrona), John Klingberg (Gothenburg), Gustav Nyquist (Halmstad), Oskar Sundqvist (Boden), and Jesper Wallstedt (Vasteras).
This connection has added an extra level of excitement for the Minnesota Wild’s participation in the 2023 NHL Global Series – Sweden.
Since its inception, there have been 38 NHL regular-season games played outside of North America, with 32 of those being played in Europe. Of those, 13 NHL regular-season games were held in Sweden, with 12 played in Stockholm at Ericsson Globe.
The 2023 NHL Global Series – Sweden will be the 10th season in which the NHL travels to Europe to play regular-season games, and these games are a way for the league to reward the passionate and dedicated fans of the sport in Europe who enjoy watching NHL games via international broadcast and media partners such as YLE, Nova, Sky Sports, ProSieben, Viaplay, and the NHL’s streaming service, NHL.TV.
